Events & Field Trips
KYANA Geological Society hosts regular meetings, educational programs, and field trips for members and guests. Our events are designed for all levels of experience—from beginners who are just learning to identify their first fossil or mineral, to long-time collectors and professionals who enjoy sharing their knowledge.
Field Trips
When conditions and site access allow, we visit quarries, roadcuts, creek beds, and other localities in Kentucky, Indiana, and surrounding states. Participants have the opportunity to collect fossils, minerals, and rocks while learning about the local geology, safety in the field, and responsible collecting practices.
Most trips are suitable for families, but some localities may have age limits, safety requirements, or special rules set by the landowner. Details for each trip—including meeting time and place, required safety gear, and what to expect—are listed in the event description on the calendar below.
Field Trip Guidelines
- All participants must follow trip leader instructions and site rules.
- Required safety gear (such as hard hats, safety glasses, or sturdy boots) will be listed with each event.
- Always bring water, sunscreen, weather-appropriate clothing, and any tools you plan to use.
- Please collect responsibly and leave the site in good condition for future visits.
Note: Events are subject to change due to weather, site availability, or other factors. Please check this page regularly for updates.
